Some events you photograph and forget. Others stay with you. Covering Chef Quique Dacosta for World Paella Day in London was definitely the latter.

Dacosta is a three Michelin star chef — one of the most decorated in Spain — and watching him work a crowd in London with a pan of paella the size of a small table is not something you see every day. The brief was to capture the event as it unfolded: the cooking, the crowd, the moment he stepped out from behind the counter and started sharing the food directly with guests.

Food events are genuinely fun to photograph, but they move fast and the light is rarely predictable. A kitchen setup, a live crowd, a chef who’s focused on the cooking and not on where the camera is — you have to work quickly and quietly and trust your instincts on the timing.

The socarrat moment — that final stage where the base of the paella caramelises — was the shot I was waiting for. The crowd leaning in, Dacosta in full flow, the whole room at peak energy. That’s the frame.

Brand events in London can go one of two ways — they either feel like a genuine experience or they feel like a press release. The Pepsi LifeWTR event at Brick Lane was firmly in the first category.

The event brought together artists and creatives for an immersive celebration built around Yinka Ilori’s installation — bold, pattern-rich work rooted in his Nigerian-British heritage that felt completely at home in Brick Lane’s creative surroundings. The kind of event where the photography almost takes care of itself, if you let it.

The challenge with a brand event is capturing both the installation and the atmosphere — the work itself and the people experiencing it. Wide shots that show the space, closer frames that show the detail and the reaction. A global brand like Pepsi needs images that work across multiple channels — social, press, campaign material — so the edit has to cover a lot of ground.

Brick Lane’s light is unpredictable, especially in the evening, but the colour in Ilori’s work meant there was always something to work with. Sometimes the brief writes itself.

Covering a capital markets day is a different kind of pressure to a regular conference. The audience is analysts, investors, journalists — people who will scrutinise every detail of the presentation, and who will use the images that come out of it in financial press, annual reports and investor communications.

I was brought in to photograph Glanbia’s strategic presentation in London, where their leadership team walked through five years of growth, acquisitions and margin improvement. The kind of content that matters to the people in that room.

The challenge with this type of event is making the speaker and the data tell the same story in a single frame. A slide full of financial metrics behind a confident executive can either look like a PR shot or genuinely convey authority and momentum — the difference is in the timing and the framing.

What makes capital markets day photography different

There’s very little room for error. The speaking slots are tight, the lighting in financial event venues is rarely ideal, and the images need to work in a board-level context — not just on social media. Clean backgrounds, sharp detail on the slides, and expressions that convey confidence rather than mid-sentence awkwardness.

For Glanbia, the goal was a set of images their communications team could use immediately — for press, for the website, for LinkedIn. Images that reflect the standard of the presentation itself.

Investor days are one of those events where the pressure is quietly very high. The audience is made up of LPs, advisors and portfolio founders — people who are paying close attention to every detail, including how the whole thing looks and feels. First impressions matter, and photography is part of that.

I was brought in to cover Expedition Capital’s investor day held at a beautiful event space in London — the kind of room with high ceilings, chandeliers and the sort of natural grandeur that does half the work for you, if you know how to use it.

The brief was straightforward: capture the day as it happened. Speakers at the podium, panel discussions, fireside chats, the audience engaged and listening. No staged moments, no stopping the flow — just clean, professional images that the team could actually use afterwards.

What goes into covering an event like this

A lot of event photography looks fine on the night and flat the next morning. The difference usually comes down to a few things — reading the room before it fills up, understanding where the light is going to be a problem, and knowing when to move and when to stay put.

At an investor day, there’s a rhythm to the agenda. Keynote speakers, panel rotations, Q&A sessions. Each format needs a slightly different approach. A solo speaker at a podium is about framing and expression. A two-person fireside chat is about capturing the dynamic between them — who’s talking, who’s listening, what the body language says. A wide room shot needs to tell the story of the whole event in a single frame.

The Expedition Capital team had clearly put a lot of thought into the production — the stage design, the branding, the presentation slides. Good event photography respects that work and makes it visible.

Why event photography matters beyond the day itself

The event is over in a few hours. The images last a lot longer. They end up on LinkedIn, in newsletters, in pitch decks, on websites. For a fund like Expedition Capital, those images are part of how they communicate who they are to the outside world — the quality of the events they run, the calibre of the people involved.

That’s really what corporate event photography is about. Not just documenting what happened, but giving you something that reflects the standard you hold yourselves to.
